Dr. Hugh Beedie
CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY |
| |
|
|
Dr Hugh Beedie is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Information Services (INSRV) as well as ARCCA.
He has been working in Cardiff University for over 25 years, carrying out a range of technology related roles in the computing service, He was responsible for developing Cardiff's Local and Wide area networks from the early days of dumb terminals and no Internet, through to the more recent period of Gigabit ethernet networking and a ubiquitous Internet. Along with the development of the underlying network, he has also led the teams responsible for developing many workstation and server-based IT services for the entire campus.
He has been CTO of INSRV and ARCCA since September 2006, and since that time has been working on three main areas; the creation of ARCCA and the project for the ARCCA SRIF3-funded tender for HPC equipment, the University's Modern Working Environment (MWE) programme, and an energy saving programme for all IT services.
His major role as Technical Design Authority in the MWE Programme is to ensure that all University IT Services are designed to interoperate with maximum functionality and minimum complexity, according to well defined IT Standards.
His ARCCA responsibilities are to ensure that, although separate from INSRV, ARCCA's services will seamlessly integrate with those of INSRV. He has also played a major role in, and was the original INSRV sponsor of the Condor Compute service.
His energy saving remit is supported by his membership of the University's Energy Management initiative, and is being satisfied by technical workstation and server design changes, investigation and change of the cooling systems used in the University's data centres, and advice on purchasing policies and user education to minimise energy consumption of PCs.

Peter Hopton
MANAGING DIRECTOR
VeryPC |
| |
|
|
An electronic engineering graduate from the University of Sheffield, Peter started an IT consultancy specialising in ethical services to the voluntary sector. He encouraged greener models, but found power consumption just kept increasing.
In February 2004, Peter founded VeryPC, a company formed to produce more energy efficient and ethical IT equipment, the first GreenPC was launched in 2005 and featured an AMD turion laptop processor and passive cooling.
Since the release of the first GreenPC, further innovations have been developed, the 29W treeton, the 9W per user GreenHive, and the incredibly energy efficient GreenServers.

Phil Nail
FOUNDER AND CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER
AFFORDABLE INTERNET SERVICES ONLINE, INC. (AISO) |
| |
|
|
Phil Nail, founder and chief technology officer for Affordable Internet Services Online, Inc. (AISO), conceived the company out of an inspired “What if” moment. In the mid 1990s, Nail began brainstorming to create a “green” web hosting and network environment that would use the power of the California sun, in lieu of energy produced through traditional fuel sources. To implement his vision, he moved his family 50 miles from the sun-drenched coast of Dana Point to the arid desert of Romoland, Calif. where, ironically, the nearest town is called Sun City.
In Romoland, Nail turned his “what if” vision and commitment to an ecologically-friendly IT infrastructure into a highly respected, successful business thousands of clients worldwide and hosted the worldwide event held on July 7th www.liveearth.org. The AISO data center began as a steel framed building with 12” thick walls filled with recycled materials. Approximately 120 solar panels were thoughtfully positioned on the property to supply the power source for both the business and the family’s home. Natural sunlight and solar tubes replaced the need for conventional lighting. A water-cooled system provides the cooling systems essential to the data center. Nail had a series of custom-built “white box” servers installed and word of its environmentally-friendly web hosting capabilities spread. Nail now has converted his complete network to use IBM x series servers and IBM Blade Center servers, VMWare for virtualization and Netapp clustered San for data. This virtualization made his hosting service even more energy efficient. Satisfied customers who valued the ecologically sound IT environment, as well as, business, technology and environmental media touted the highly-reliable “green” web hosting and networking resources of AISO.
Nail has ensured AISO is one of the few truly “green” hosting environments that relies exclusively on clean energy--power generated by solar panels. While many companies purchase green energy credits and claim to be “green,” they actually use traditional power. Nail has also been closely involved in implementing the virtual terminal (thin client) into a hosted solution for small to medium businesses worldwide.
Today, Nail continues to test other innovative ways to continue down the green path. The current project is to power the cooling systems using a generator powered by wvo (waste vegetable oil). This will to further his calling for the use of clean energy and environmentally-friendly solutions for the industry.

Andy Smale
SENIOR IT CONSULTANT
HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL |
| |
|
|
Andy is a Senior IT Consultant with Hampshire County Council’s IT Services department. A physics graduate from Sheffield University, Andy has 11 years’ experience with the county working on various technical and management roles with Oracle, SAP, Windows and Citrix technology, and is now taking a lead role in the department’s Green IT Task Force.
The Green IT Task Force is reviewing the majority of IT operations across the county, with a view to understanding how sustainable its services are, identifying areas where the department can improve its green credentials, and measuring progress against targets. A particular area of focus is schools, which collectively have an estimated 60,000 desktop machines – a number which is rapidly growing, and presenting a challenge in respect of controlling corporate electricity consumption.
The Task Force is coordinating its work with other departments including Environment and Property Services, and is increasingly working with external organisations that can offer expertise in aspects such as culture change. Its work will tie in closely with other corporate projects to reduce the county’s carbon footprint, rationalise the building estate, and promote flexible and mobile working across the 37,000-strong workforce.
